The School of Philosophy, Anthropology and Social Inquiry Social Theory

Doctor of PHilosophy (PHD)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the major research degree offered by the University of Melbourne and may be undertaken as a supervised research program in social theory. Social theory students are advised to enrol for a masters degree in the first instance and apply to transfer later to PhD candidature. The PhD regulations make provision for such transfers, allowing credit for the period of enrolment as a masters student. Prospective students need to discuss the different possibilities, as well as their area of study, with the staff of the Ashworth Program for Social Theory, prior to enrolment.

Staff provide research expertise as outlined in this publication, and share a commitment to effective supervision and research training. Enquiries relating to supervision and other academic matters should be directed to the Ashworth Program, School of Social and Environmental Enquiry. The PhD Handbook and application forms can be obtained from the School of Graduate Studies or, in the case of international students, from the Faculty of Arts office.
